National Socialist era

The National Socialist era refers to the reign of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) in the German Reich. It began on January 30, 1933 with Adolf Hitler's appointment as Reich Chancellor and ended on 8 May 1945 with the Wehrmacht unconditionally surrendering to the Allies. Under Hitler's rule, Germany was transformed into a totalitarian state in which the NSDAP controlled nearly all aspects of life. The period is also known as the Third Reich (Drittes Reich, meaning "Third Realm" or "Third Empire", with the Holy Roman Empire and the German Empire being the first two).
