"Take-over of power" by the National Socialists

Adolf Hitler's appointment as Reich Chancellor by President Paul von Hindenburg on January 30,1933, is described as "Machtergreifung" or "Machtübernahme" ("take-over of power"). The term is also used in the context of the subsequent transformation of the Weimar Republic's parliamentary democracy that had existed up to then into a centralist dictatorship.
